With all of the Occupy Wall Street stuff going on, it is easy to think that we need to overthrow wall street because wall street is the problem. Some think we need to overthrow the government because government is the problem. But I will be honest with you and tell you the primary problem (not that Wall Street and the government are not problems, they are, but they are secondary to the first problem).
The first entity that must be overthrown is yourself.
Gal. 5:16 (ESV) commands believers: “But I say,walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratifythe desires of the flesh.” In several other places, the Scriptures speak about the war inside all of us – the war between our fleshly desires and the Spirit inside of us (Romans 7, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3).
Christians can still sin though they should not if they walk in the Spirit. But that is a BIG IF to walk in the Spirit and where all Christians (including myself) go wrong is that we often walk in the flesh. When we do so, we seek to fulfill its selfish desires and we fail to reflect the glory of Christ.
So the next time you are tempted to think that the problem is outside of you in any entity other than yourself, remind yourself that your FIRST problem is you. You must be overthrown. In other words, your flesh must be overthrown by the Spirit and God clearly gives us instructions for overthrowing our flesh in His Word of truth when we read it – the Bible.
Let’s revolt angrily against ourselves – against our flesh! Let’s protest that! Because it is that sinful nature and the old habits of the flesh that lead us away from the only One who truly loves us: Christ Jesus! Christ died for my sins and to give me the power to overcome sin and death. That is true love!
