Before we begin today, we’d like to encourage you to read Jeremiah 35. It will be very helpful to you as you continue reading this post.

Lessons from this passage:

  • The Lord tells Jeremiah to offer wine to the Rechabites.
  • The Rechabites refuse to drink wine because of their vows to their forefathers.
  • Soon after the Rechabites leave, God instructs Israel to learn a lesson from the Rechabites to obey their Heavenly Father just like the Rechabites obeyed their earthly father.

What it says about God:

  • God punished the wicked. In previous chapters, Israel had been sinning against God. And in the next few chapters, God tells them of the coming destruction that will fall on them because of their sins.
  • God rewards obedient servants. In Jeremiah 35, God blesses the Rechabites for obeying their father in that they will always have a man to stand before the Lord.

Suggested Application/Spiritual Growth:

  • Obey God. We like to think of it in 3 simple ways.

Immediately — do it right away

Completely — do it all the all the way and to your best ability all for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31)

Joyfully — do it happily. Remember that you are serving the Lord of lords. If you struggle with serving joyfully, consider James 1:2-3: Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

The Rechabites refused to drink wine out of devotion to their forefathers. What sacrifices could you make to better serve Jesus in devotion to Him?
