This passage of scripture deals with directing your heart and its desires away from drugs and alcohol (or whatever becomes idolatry in your heart) and towards righteous decisions of living for the glory of Christ.

Proverbs 23:19-21 says

Hear, my son, and be wise,
and direct your heart in the way.
20Be not among drunkards
or among gluttonous eaters of meat,
21for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,
and slumber will clothe them with rags.

I love the honesty of God’s Word and how His truth tells us to direct our hearts. We are personally responsible for the choices we make.

Culture, movies, and people tend to promote the message of “follow your heart and see where it takes you”. “Go with your gut because it’s probably right”. “You do whatever you feel is right in your heart”.

But God says the exact opposite when it comes to desires. According to the Bible, we are not to follow our hearts’ desires, especially in regard to addictive choices! Proverbs tells us it will only lead to poverty and utter ruin.
